Men's Space

Our befriending programme reducing isolation for men
Helping to reconnect men with each other and the community through home visits and focused group activities
What's it about?
Men's Space offers support and friendship mainly for men aged over 50 years old living in the Ladywood, Edgbaston and Harborne areas.
We aim to help every man to feel connected, supported and thrive in life, working with men who are feeling isolated and lonely, who are keen to meet others and try new things that help to engage them in the community.
Men's Space is about:
-
Friendship
-
Connection
-
Support
-
Encouragement
-
Fun
-
Challenge
-
Adventure
Karis offers support and friendship to those who need it most. We come alongside men in need of this kind of support, acting as good neighbours and in really practical ways, to help them through whatever hardships are arising in their lives.
How can we help?
We run a range of activities that men can get involved in, providing support and encouragement, and enabling friendships to be formed that can help reduce isolation and loneliness. By meeting together, our community feels more connected with greater opportunities for men to have a sense of belonging and purpose.
Our current activities include:
-
Table tennis
-
Walking for Health
-
Gardening
-
Board games
-
Coffee and chat mornings
-
Monthly themed evening events
We are always reviewing, with our participants, their interests and needs and, with them, building new activities around the feedback we receive.
For further information please contact our Men's Space Project Coordinator, David Farrugia, on david.farrugia@karisneighbourscheme.org or phone the main office on 0121 455 7524.

Feedback from our participants:
“I find new friends at the table tennis club, when I am at home I am just thinking and stressing, but when I come to play table tennis I get a good feeling.”
“I was suffering from depression due to not getting out of the flat, but the encouragement and company has helped me build up confidence in coming out and helped me overcome certain parts of my disability."
“I was gradually spiralling into an old man .. what [the project lead] did was set out possible options. Conversations about mental and physical health helped me think about making more of my life.”
“It has given me a belief in myself, as well as kindness and friendship, and now I feel deep in myself a better place, and it makes me feel more at peace internally .. and gives me an inner confidence.”
“I enjoy working as I’m unemployed and it is good to do things for the community."
